Letter to the editor: Trump is like Pontius Pilate

Canton Repository

As the old saying goes, “The Lord uses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord.” I believe that now even Mike Pence would agree Donald Trump is one of the bad ones. So who does Trump choose to be his next running mate? Maybe Mike Johnson?

Apparently, like with Elvis Presley, there were a lot of Jesus impersonators. Barabbas was calling himself, literally, “the Son of the Father.” Trump is not trying to honor Jesus, but rather to substitute himself for Jesus. Sixty years ago, the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus,” but only in England. Now, Trump is more popular than Jesus, but only among Christians.

Rather than comparing Trump to Barabbas, I would instead compare Trump to Pontius Pilate. Both Trump and Pilate went out of their way to praise Jesus, even while subtly plotting to destroy everything Jesus represented. For Trump to sell Bibles is about like Pilate declaring Jesus to be a “king,” with a crown of thorns.

Somehow, nothing that goes wrong is ever Trump’s fault. Like Pilate, Trump symbolically “washes his hands” of the whole thing. Either he was just joking, or he got bad advice, or he was not aware. Until he sees support for the bad thing that happened, in which case he rushes in to claim full credit.

I have noticed on Fox “News” that they can’t admit anyone is against Trump. Religious people who oppose Trump selling Bibles must be against Bibles, and conservatives who oppose Ronna McDaniel must be against Republicans. Because nobody could seriously be against Trump, could they?

Regarding the so-called “Christians” who support Trump in 2024, there is a lot that they don’t have. One thing they certainly don’t have is any credibility to speak on the subject of religion.
